Breed Overview

Cockatiels are small, social birds that are native to Australia. They are known for their distinctive crests and playful personalities. Because they are ground feeders, meaning they choose to forage on the ground, they must be swift and agile fliers to avoid predators. They can mimic a variety of sounds and the males can learn to say words and phrases.

📝 Nimbus's Story: Nimbus and his buddy, Gojo, came from a home in Indiana where they were severely neglected. Their feathers were shredded, their cages were filthy, and their diets were abysmal. Their owner tried to surrender them to Pet Smart, where a vet tech took them in, and they eventually made their way to our volunteer, Claudia, who brought them to the sanctuary. Nimbus is doing better, has settled in, and is enjoying affection from our staff, and free flight in our Tiel Treetop room with many other cockatiels. He has not yet bonded to any other bird. We feel he is ready for a human companion who can show him all the love and affection he wants and needs.

Temperament: A bit shy, but growing more brave everyday. Nimbus enjoys human companionship and will snuggle and ask for affection daily.

🎶 Talks/Sings?: Nimbus sings quite a bit! You can see his singing abilities in the video below.

🥜 Favorite Treats: Millets

💡 Best Fit: We believe Nimbus would fit best with someone who has had birds before, but it is not necessary. He also particularly loves people with beards -- he loves to rub his cheeks in them!

🐦 Can Live with Other Birds?: Nimbus is great with other birds.

📢 Noise Level: Can be loud at times, but not often

🥦 Diet: Hagen Tropican, Bird Street Bistro cooked mix, vegetables finely chopped, and seeds sparingly

🏠 Cage & Play Area Needs: Flight cage with close bars for small birds. He should be let out daily to fly.

🩺 Health Notes: No known health issues, has been vetted
