Merlin
Double Yellow Headed Amazon
🦜 Species: Double Yellow Headed Amazon (possibly Tres Marias)
🎂 Age: 27
👫 Sex: F
📏 Size: medium
📝 Merlin's Story: Merlin was born in 1995 and spent her entire life with her previous owner, Charlene. She was loved dearly, and she brought so much joy and happiness to her mom and her friends. Now Merlin brings that same joy and happiness to everyone who meets her at Mulberry Acres Rescue. When she first came to the rescue, we were under the impression she was a boy. But a DNA test (and some of her behaviors) told us otherwise. Her previous owner said maybe her name should have been Merlina all along! We can't wait to see what the next 27 years look like for Merlin!
✨ Temperament: Sweet, chatty, a bit shy but warms up quickly. Doesn't mind being held and snuggled once she is bonded. She is very hesitant to bite, which is a rare find!
🎶 Talks/Sings?: She talks all the time, saying things like, "I'm Merlin!" "Thank you, Merlin," "I'm so tired," and "Hello! Hi! Bye!"
🎸 Favorite Song: Mr. Ed Theme Song or Popeye the Sailor Man
🧩 Favorite Activities: Talking and singing, getting alllll the attention from humans
🥜 Favorite Treats: Peanuts, peanuts, peanuts (but she shouldn't have them often)
🐦 Best Quirk: She loves to laugh!
💡 Best Fit: We would love to see Merlin with an owner who is home most of the day, possibly retired. Someone who will talk back and forth to Merlin and give her lots of attention. Someone familiar with Amazons would be a bonus, as well as someone who can work with her on flying for her balance (see health notes below).
🐦 Can Live with Other Birds?: Merlin does not need to be with other birds. She is quite content with a human companion. But she does well around other birds if they keep their distance.
📢 Noise Level: Loud
🥦 Diet: TOPs pellets mostly, also can have Bird Street Bistro cooked mix, vegetables and fruits finely chopped, seeds and nuts sparingly
🏠 Cage & Play Area Needs: Merlin needs a medium-sized cage with a play stand on top so she can climb out and perch above. She likes to get on the ground and explore as well.
🩺 Health Notes: Merlin has been seen by our vet and there are no health concerns, however please note that her right foot is atrophied. She has trouble opening and closing that foot completely, which means that she may stumble from time to time from a perch if she loses balance or is spooked. Teaching Merlin to fly would be a great asset and help her retain her balance better. She is a great climber and does well in a medium-sized cage with plenty of perches to help her get around.
