Petri
🦜 Species: Senegal
🎂 Age: 2 years
👫 Sex: F
📏 Size: small/medium
📝 Petri's Story: Petri was very much loved by her first owner. He taught her how to say her name, how to recall, and how to lay on her back in his hand. However, Petri became too bonded to him and became aggressive toward other members of the family. He brought her to Mulberry Acres in the hopes she would find a home where she would thrive.
✨ Temperament: Velcro-bird, a bit shy of new things, intelligent, affectionate
🎶 Talks/Sings?: Petri says a few things like her name and "come here." She makes kissing noises and little whistles. She's a very quiet bird.
🧩 Favorite Activities: Petri loves with all her heart, and her favorite pastime is hanging onto your shirt or chewing on hoodie zippers.
🥜 Favorite Treats: Cashews, sunflower seeds
🐦 Best Quirk: Saying her name: "Petri!"
💡 Best Fit: Petri will likely become a one-person bird and bond to a favorite in the family. Her new owner must recognize that Petri can become aggressive while trying to "protect" her person. She will need a patient owner who can work with her on these issues, and use the guidance of an avian vet if needed. Outside of her hormonal season, Petri is a sweet and affectionate bird who is immensely intelligent and trainable. Petri loves to be out of her cage, so someone who works from home or who is retired would be a great fit for her.
🐦 Can Live with Other Birds?: She does well around other birds but she prefers her favorite human.
📢 Noise Level: Quiet
🥦 Diet: She is currently on a strict diet of TOPs pellets during her hormonal season. Outside of this season, she is offered fresh chop, Bird Street Bistro cooked foods, and nuts and seeds sparingly.
🏠 Cage & Play Area Needs: Petri is used to being out of the cage for most of the day. She prefers sitting on a shoulder but will enjoy a play stand as well.
🩺 Health Notes: Petri has a very strong hormonal instinct and during that time (November-May), Petri can become aggressive toward "intruders" around her favorite person. She also tends to pluck her feathers during this time. This may need to be monitored and mitigated with the guidance of an avian vet. Otherwise she is in good health.

Breed Overview
Senegal parrots are small to medium-sized parrots native to West Africa. Known for their quiet nature, they often form close bonds with their favorite person and can be playful, intelligent, and affectionate. However, their strong preference for one individual can lead to behavioral challenges, especially if their social and emotional needs aren’t consistently met. This, along with a lack of understanding about their long lifespan and need for enrichment, is a common reason why Senegal parrots are frequently rehomed.
COMMON NAMES: Senegal parrot, Sennies
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Poicephalus senegalus
ADULT SIZE: 10 inches in length, weighing from 4 to 6 ounces
LIFE EXPECTANCY: 50 years, although 20 to 30 years is more common
